The Drawing Clubs

The Drawing School’s successful outreach programme on Saturday afternoons for Gifted and Talented School Children has been running since 2003, to address the gap in observational drawing instruction at secondary school level and encourage future generations of artists. In 2006, this work was expanded to provide after-school Drawing Clubs to further our commitment to encourage young people to develop skills, confidence and professional potential in fine arts. The Drawing Clubs provide free after-school classes in local community spaces or schools to children between the ages of 10-14 years.

We target schools across London where there are significant levels of social and economic deprivation to provide exposure to the arts for young people whose circumstances may otherwise deny them the opportunity. The Drawing Clubs help to improve children’s ability in all core subjects, broaden the range of activities available to them and bring pupils from different schools together.

The classes are taught by our postgraduate students and alumni providing them with excellent professional development opportunities.

Your gift could enable us to continue to run these Drawing Clubs and approach new schools and community centres to establish additional clubs. We greatly appreciate any level of support.

A two-hour session once a week for three ten-week terms costs £27,000 for up to 30 children; £900 pays for one child to attend a year of Drawing Clubs.

The entire budget for Drawing Clubs in 2007/8 is £117,000, which will support over 200 children. This includes setting up three additional clubs, running six taster sessions in schools and the Drawing Club Summer School (two week-long workshops for a total of 70 children).

“The Drawing Club is an excellent opportunity for students with an interest and talent in art to develop their skills in an atmosphere where they can concentrate uninterrupted, in the company of young people who have similar interests. It is particularly important for young people from boroughs with high socio-economic deprivation to be given these experiences, which they would not otherwise get”.
— Pauline Hinchliffe, Coordinator, Southwark Excellence in Cities
